The first and last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, married Raisa, whom he adored while still a student. The marriage was registered in the fall of 1953. Soon the young spouses had a tragedy, they lost a child. Gorbachev gave a frank interview to "Komsomolke".

According to him, Raisa Maksimovna became pregnant soon after the wedding. However, doctors discouraged her from giving birth: the year before, Gorbachev experienced a serious illness that caused a serious complication of the heart. It was impossible to bear a child, but the Gorbachevs had already come up with a name for their future son, Sergey.

Mikhail Sergeyevich was given an ultimatum: either he keeps his wife alive or allows her to give birth. In fact, Gorbachev had no choice. Pregnancy was interrupted.

Gorbachev's only daughter, Irina, was born in 1957, almost immediately after their arrival in Stavropol.
